The problem: How to connect the success stories of alumni to the school's mission?
The solution: A paperclip.
This annual report was to feature text and photos submitted by alumni. Wisely anticipating the vast range of photo quality and story lengths, we knew we would need a flexible way to graphically unite these potentially ordinary snapshots to their extraordinary narratives. The paperclip was a perfect visual clue that connected on so many levels: it allowed the reader to “accept” the myriad of image shapes and sizes without question; it secured all of the disparate elements together on each spread; and overall it became the tiny hook that made this piece cohesive and engaging.
The good designer can pin down ways to graphically highlight the good and affix solutions to the problematic.
